Elena believed Jesus loved her. But disappointment had quietly taught part of her heart to stay guarded—even with Him.
Elena had followed Jesus for years. She prayed, worshiped, served, and believed the promises of Scripture.
But when her marriage ended despite years of prayer, something inside her changed.
She never stopped believing in God. Yet when life became uncertain, she often found herself thinking:
Stage Two had helped Elena understand where that fear came from. Stage Three asked a deeper question.
Elena began recognizing that some of what she expected from Jesus had been shaped by what people and painful circumstances had taught her.
Elena was used to carrying burdens by thinking, planning, fixing, rehearsing, and preparing for what might happen next.
One morning she read Jesus' invitation:
The words challenged something in her. Jesus was not saying, Work harder until you feel safe enough to trust Me.
He was saying, Come.
The road to Emmaus gave Elena a new way to think about the seasons when God's presence had felt hidden.
The disciples did not recognize Jesus at first. Yet their inability to recognize Him did not mean He had been absent.
Elena began looking back differently. There were still questions she could not answer. But she could also see people who had supported her, strength she did not know she had, Scriptures that had met her at the right moment, and grace that had carried her through days she thought would break her.
As Elena came to know Jesus more clearly, trust became less about handing her future to someone unknown and more about placing her life into the hands of Someone whose character she was learning to know.
She thought about Peter after his failure. Jesus did not meet him with condemnation. He restored him, entrusted him with responsibility, and once again said:
Elena realized she did not have to entrust everything in one dramatic moment.
Entrusting something precious to Jesus did not mean pretending it was no longer precious. It meant choosing to place what mattered deeply into the hands of the One she was learning to trust.
Trust became less like one final decision and more like a relationship Elena practiced each day.
Elena's goal was not to manufacture stronger feelings of trust. It was to continue walking with Jesus and notice His character.
What am I holding tightly today that Jesus is inviting me to place into His loving hands?
Trust was becoming relational. She was learning His heart—not merely trying to control her own fear.
Elena had not reached a place where every fear was gone or every question was answered. She had reached something more important: she was coming to know the character of the One she was trusting.
Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me with patience instead of pressure. Help me see Your heart clearly through Your Word. Teach me to rest in Your presence, recognize Your faithfulness, and bring You the fears and burdens I still try to carry alone. Today I place into Your hands what I cannot control. When fear returns, remind me that Your character has not changed. Keep teaching me to trust You one honest step at a time. Amen.
