When You Begin to See Yourself Differently

Danielle had spent years hearing the same message: too emotional, too sensitive, too expressive — too much.

The Story

A Comment That Stayed With Her

Danielle loved people openly. She remembered birthdays, welcomed the person standing alone, celebrated good news, and brought energy into ordinary moments.

But she also felt relational moments deeply. Over the years she heard, “Calm down,” “You’re too sensitive,” and “You talk too much.” So she learned to monitor herself.

Then a longtime friend casually told her, “Sometimes you can be a lot.” Danielle laughed with her — but the words followed her home.

For the first time, Danielle stopped asking only, “What is wrong with me?” and began wondering, “Why did God make me this way?”
What Was Beneath It

Connection Was Not the Same as Approval

Danielle's strongest reactions often touched a deeper question: “Is there room for me here?”

Connection

  • Participating and sharing life with others
  • Knowing she belongs
  • Offering warmth and receiving relationship
  • Being present without constantly reducing herself

Approval

  • Needing every reaction to reassure her
  • Reshaping herself to regain acceptance
  • Using other people's responses as the final mirror
  • Assuming discomfort means she must be wrong
Discover helped Danielle name the difference: God designed her for Connection. He did not design her identity to depend on the changing reactions of other people.
Temperament & Design

Her Design Was Not the Enemy

Warmth, enthusiasm, emotional responsiveness, and a desire for Connection can all be real strengths.

God-Given Strengths

  • Welcomes and includes people
  • Celebrates easily and expresses warmth
  • Recognizes changes in relational atmosphere
  • Brings energy and emotional presence

Elastic Stretch™

  • Approval becomes too important
  • Self-monitoring replaces freedom
  • Strong emotion can fill too much space
  • Other people's reactions begin defining her
Wisdom is different from shame. Wisdom helps Danielle steward her temperament. Shame tells her that her temperament itself is the problem.
Rubber Band Method™

Recognize the Repeated Pull

Rubber Band Method™: Recognize the repeated pull–reaction–return cycle that keeps snapping you back into a familiar default response.

Danielle’s Rubber Band Pattern
Her specific cycle is not the definition of the Method. It is the pattern the Method helps her recognize.
💬Express — Danielle shows warmth, excitement, emotion, and desire for Connection
Question — “Was I too much again?”
🤐Suppress — she talks less, shows less, and begins monitoring herself
🤝Reconnect — her natural desire for relationship draws her back toward people
↩️Express again — then another difficult reaction can pull her back into questioning herself
The Rubber Band Method™ helps Danielle see the cycle before it automatically decides what she will believe about herself or how she will respond.

See the Design Beneath the Pattern

Discover: Recognize the unique, God-given way you are designed and understand the temperament beneath your patterns.

Connection (Inclusion)
“Do I belong?”

Danielle longs to know there is room for her in relationships without constantly reducing herself to remain accepted.

Discover does not mean: “This is just who I am, so everyone else has to accept every reaction.”

It means: “This is part of how God designed me. Now I can recognize what is healthy, what has become stretched, and where I need His wisdom.”
Snap-Back Check™

Interrupt the Old Conclusion

Pause → Identify → Remember → Respond → Reset

⏸️
Pause: Danielle stops before automatically concluding, “There is something wrong with me.”
🔎
Identify: She notices the hurt, the need for Connection, the pull toward approval, and whether her temperament has become stretched.
✝️
Remember: She returns to God's truth. Her temperament is not the enemy. God designed her with purpose, and wisdom does not require self-rejection.
💬
Respond: Sometimes she listens longer. Sometimes she admits she was hurt. Sometimes she makes room for someone else. Sometimes she enjoys her excitement without apologizing for it.
🌱
Reset: She learns from the moment and moves forward with grace instead of reshaping herself just to regain approval.
The pause does not tell Danielle who she is. Discovering God's design is doing that work. The Snap-Back Check™ simply interrupts the old self-criticism long enough for her to respond from truth.
A Different Response

Understanding Instead of Shrinking

Danielle did not become less Sanguine. She became more able to distinguish her God-given design from the patterns that had developed around it.

“I do not have to choose between criticizing myself and excusing myself. I can understand myself — and ask God for wisdom.”

She could acknowledge when she dominated a conversation without condemning her whole personality. She could bring disappointment to God without calling herself “too sensitive.” And she could let another person's reaction be information — not identity.

Begin with God's Design

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
— Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Reflection: Where have you confused your God-given need for Connection with the need for other people's approval?

Lord, show me what You placed within me and help me understand Your purpose for it. Teach me to recognize what is healthy, what has become stretched, and where I need Your wisdom. Help me grow without shame and live from the truth of Your design. Amen.

“Lord, what are You helping me understand about the way You created me?”
