The Story

The Person Everyone Could Count On

Marcus had worked for the same company for nearly nine years. He knew the systems, completed what was assigned, and rarely complained.

When coworkers were out, Marcus covered. When deadlines tightened, Marcus stayed later. When someone needed help, Marcus usually figured out a practical way to make it work.

Then responsibilities began piling up. One employee left. Another transferred. Temporary assignments became permanent. Marcus shortened lunches, worked longer, and even logged back in after dinner.

Each request seemed manageable by itself. So Marcus kept saying the same thing:

“Okay.”
His reliability was still a strength. But people had begun assuming Marcus was managing because he never told them otherwise.
What Was Beneath It

His Heart Needed Direction

Marcus was not simply saying, “I don’t want more work.” Something deeper was being affected.

Direction (Control)
“Am I Safe?”

Marcus functions best when responsibilities, priorities, expectations, and boundaries are clear enough for him to know what he is accountable for carrying.

What Marcus Needed

  • Clear priorities
  • Realistic expectations
  • Defined responsibilities
  • Room to communicate capacity honestly

What Marcus Did Instead

  • Stayed quiet
  • Adjusted again
  • Hoped someone would notice
  • Carried frustration nobody knew existed
Other people could respond to what Marcus communicated. They could not be expected to interpret needs he continually kept hidden.
Temperament & Design

Calmness Was Still a Strength

Marcus did not need to become louder or more confrontational. He needed to recognize when his strengths had stretched beyond their healthy purpose.

God-Given Strengths

  • Calm under pressure
  • Patient and practical
  • Flexible when circumstances change
  • Conserves energy instead of reacting to every problem

Elastic Stretch™

  • Calmness begins hiding a real problem
  • Flexibility becomes silent accommodation
  • Avoiding one conversation creates months of extra strain
  • Cooperation stretches into carrying what was never clarified
There is a difference between preserving peace and avoiding necessary communication. Marcus did not need to stop being calm. He needed to know when calmness called for patience—and when it called for words.
Rubber Band Method™

Recognize the Repeated Pull

Rubber Band Method™: Recognize the repeated pull–reaction–return cycle that keeps snapping you back into a familiar default response.

Marcus’s Rubber Band Pattern
His specific pattern shows how temporary relief from an uncomfortable conversation keeps pulling him back toward silence.
⚠️Recognize the problem — Marcus sees that his workload is already too heavy
🤐Stay quiet — “It’s easier to just handle it.”
📦Accommodate — he absorbs another responsibility
🔋Become depleted — fatigue and quiet frustration build
💭Promise to speak next time — but the next request brings the same pull
↩️Stay quiet again — and the cycle snaps back into place
Silence gave Marcus relief in the moment. But that relief came at the cost of clarity, energy, and honest communication.
S — Speak

Give Your Heart a Voice

Speak: Find your voice and express what your heart truly needs with clarity and grace.

Direction (Control)
“I need to know what I am responsible for carrying.”

Marcus does not need to accuse, demand, or control the outcome. He needs to communicate what is true so clarity can become possible.

Speak does not mean: becoming confrontational, saying everything immediately, or demanding that others respond exactly as you want.

It means: recognizing when silence is keeping an important need hidden and expressing that need honestly, respectfully, and clearly.
Snap-Back Check™

Interrupt the Automatic “Yes”

Pause → Identify → Remember → Respond → Reset

⏸️
Pause: Marcus does not immediately say yes. He gives himself enough space to consider what the new request will require.
🔎
Identify: He notices his current workload, competing priorities, frustration, desire to avoid the conversation, and his need for Direction.
✝️
Remember: God has given Marcus both a steady spirit and a voice. Biblical wisdom does not require him to choose between truth and peace.
💬
Respond: “I can help with this, but I need some clarity about my current priorities. If I take this on, what needs to come off my plate?”
🌱
Reset: Marcus moves forward without resentment, using the clarified priorities rather than silently carrying an agreement he never honestly made.
The Snap-Back Check™ creates the pause. Speak helps Marcus use that space to put clear, faithful words around what his heart has been trying to communicate.
A Different Response

He Did Not Become Louder

At the next staff meeting, Marcus was asked to lead another project. He felt the familiar response rising:

“Just say okay.”

Then he looked at the six responsibilities already written in his notebook.

“I can help with the project,” he said calmly, “but before I take responsibility for it, I think we need to talk about my current priorities.”

His supervisor was surprised—not angry. Together they reviewed his workload. Some assignments stayed. Others were reassigned. One deadline moved.

He simply told the truth about what he needed.

Truth in Love

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
— Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

Reflection: What truth needs to be spoken here, and how can you express it with love?

Heavenly Father, give me wisdom to know when silence is faithful and when something important needs to be said. Help me understand what my heart truly needs and give me courage to communicate it honestly. Guard my words from anger and resentment. Teach me to speak truth with clarity, grace, and love, trusting You with the outcome. Thank You that I do not need to become louder to use the voice You have already given me. Amen.

Sometimes peace comes through remaining quiet. And sometimes wisdom requires speaking.
