The Story

“Sure. I’ll Take Care of It.”

The casserole had barely cooled before Sarah was loading another basket into her car. Her phone buzzed again.

“Can you stop by Mom’s house?”
“The church needs someone to organize Saturday’s luncheon.”
“Would you mind looking over this report before tomorrow?”

Without thinking, Sarah answered the same way she always did:

“Sure.”

By the time she pulled into her driveway that night, she had missed lunch, the laundry was still waiting, and the bills sat untouched on the counter.

She leaned against the kitchen counter and whispered, “I’m so tired.”

But the next thought came almost immediately: “If I don’t do it... who will?”
What Was Beneath It

Responsibility Had Become a Place of Security

Sarah’s deepest need was not simply “more control.” Her heart was looking for safety, stability, and confidence that things would be okay.

Direction (Control)
“Am I Safe?”

Sarah’s God-given need for Direction is legitimate. Difficulty grows when personal control and responsibility become the primary places she looks for the security only God can fully provide.

What Sarah Believed

  • “Someone has to hold this together.”
  • “It is easier if I do it myself.”
  • “If I release this, something may fall apart.”

What Was Happening

  • Others had less room to contribute
  • Fatigue became constant
  • Frustration and resentment grew
  • Responsibility became tied to feeling secure
The problem was not Sarah’s need for Direction. The deeper question was where that need had gradually begun looking for security.
Temperament & Design

Leadership Was Still a Gift

Sarah’s willingness to step forward, organize, protect, and act decisively reflected real strengths in the way God designed her.

God-Given Strengths

  • Sees what needs to be done
  • Acts with confidence and initiative
  • Brings structure in uncertain situations
  • Uses leadership to serve and protect others

Elastic Stretch™

  • Responsibility becomes over-responsibility
  • Leadership becomes self-reliance
  • Service becomes constant obligation
  • Strength becomes exhaustion, frustration, and resentment
Elastic Stretch™: Responsibility had not stopped being a strength. It had become strained under the weight of carrying more than Sarah was designed to carry alone.
Rubber Band Method™

Recognize the Repeated Pull

Rubber Band Method™: Recognize the repeated pull–reaction–return cycle that keeps snapping you back into a familiar default response.

Sarah’s Rubber Band Pattern
Hundreds of small choices had trained her to return to the same belief: everything depends on me.
👀Notice a need — Sarah sees something that needs attention
🙋‍♀️Step in — she volunteers or takes responsibility before others do
📦Carry more — the task joins everything she is already managing
😣Become exhausted — frustration and resentment quietly build
⚠️Fear letting go — “If I don’t hold this together, something may fall apart.”
↩️Step in again — the cycle snaps back into place
The Rubber Band Method™ helps Sarah see how repeated acts of self-reliance gradually strengthened the belief that responsibility was the safest place to stand.

Strength That Learns to Depend

Grow: Turn toward God’s transforming work as the Holy Spirit shapes your responses toward greater Christlikeness. Choose healthier, intentional responses.

Direction (Control)
“I can be responsible without believing everything depends on me.”

Sarah’s growth is not becoming passive or irresponsible. It is learning that faithful leadership can include trust, delegation, receiving help, and releasing what God did not assign her to carry.

Grow does not mean: becoming less capable, refusing responsibility, or waiting for everyone else to act first.

It means: allowing the Holy Spirit to transform self-reliance into faithful dependence—using strength in obedience to God instead of using strength to prove that everything is under control.
Snap-Back Check™

Interrupt the Automatic “I’ll Do It”

Pause → Identify → Remember → Respond → Reset

⏸️
Pause: Sarah does not answer the request immediately. She creates enough space to ask whether this responsibility is actually hers.
🔎
Identify: She notices the need, her impulse to take over, the fear that things may fall apart, her current capacity, and her legitimate need for Direction.
✝️
Remember: God is sovereign. He never asked Sarah to become everyone’s provider. Faithfulness means carrying what He entrusts to her—not everything she is capable of carrying.
💬
Respond: She asks for help, delegates, says no when appropriate, or chooses one responsibility while releasing another.
🌱
Reset: When the old pattern returns, Sarah comes back without shame, learns from the moment, and practices dependence again.
The Snap-Back Check™ interrupts self-reliance. Grow is the larger work of allowing the Holy Spirit to reshape how Sarah understands strength, faithfulness, and dependence.
A Different Response

She Let Someone Else Carry It

The next request still made Sarah want to answer immediately.

“Sure. I’ll take care of it.”

But this time she paused.

She asked her siblings to share responsibility for their mother. She allowed someone else at church to coordinate the next event. One task she accepted. Another she released.

At first, letting go felt uncomfortable. But the world did not fall apart.

True strength was not carrying everything herself. It was faithfully walking with the One who was already holding everything together.

Scripture · Reflection · Prayer

Come to Me, All Who Are Weary

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Reflection: Which responsibilities are flowing from faithful obedience—and which have you begun carrying because you believe everything depends on you?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the strengths You have placed within me. Forgive me for the times I have quietly believed that everything depends on me. Show me what You have truly entrusted to my care and give me courage to release what was never mine to carry. Teach me to serve from faith rather than fear, from obedience rather than obligation, and from confidence in Your faithfulness rather than confidence in my own control. Shape my strength into greater dependence on You. Amen.

God never asked you to become everyone’s provider. He invites you to walk closely with the One who already is.
